I think many movies have their place. Of course they are meant to entertain, but I also think some serve as a bigger purpose. I have my favorite movies that just make me feel good, and I even have categories of favorite movies (ie. horror, romance).
While those are great, there is really something about inspiring movies that motivate you or challenge your ways of thinking.
There are movies that I have watched that if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be thinking the way I do today and I definitely don’t think I would be exactly who I am without them.
I have compiled a list of a few of my favorite inspiring movies that have really impacted my way of thinking, how I live and why I have some of the morals that I do. I am hoping that they can maybe inspire you, or perhaps just give you a few suggestions for your ongoing movie list (hey, no shame, we all have one!).
My favorite inspiring movies:
This movie is about a couple who lives in Manhattan, NY, and after the guy loses his job, they go on a road trip to live with his brother for awhile. On the way there, they stumble into a commune where they are forced to start living life more simply and actually end up enjoying it.
It is a comedy, so it’s hilarious, but the overall message that you don’t need to live in a high-rise in NYC to be happy is one that I am taking to the grave. It really opened my mind to the different ways people live their lives. Heck, I even want to go try a commune for a short while!
2. Into The Wild:
If you have not seen this movie, you are REALLY missing out. This is about a young man who graduates from college and realizes that he does not want to live the cookie cutter life that his wealthy parents have panned out for him. He gets rid of all his things and donates his savings and embarks on a journey across America. He lives off the land in an abandoned bus and meets some interesting people along the way.
This movie is based off a true story and that the people you meet on your way through life can have a huge impact on you personally. It also is a huge realization that life means nothing without meaningful people there to enjoy it with you. The movie has a plot-twist ending that will leave you upset/understanding and really thinking. And movies that make me think are some of my favorite ones!
I just recently watched this one a couple of weeks ago and it is definitely in my top five favorite movies of all time! This is about a man who lives in the wilderness with his 6 kids in a school bus. He teaches them self-defense, how to hunt for food, and even home schools them where they are impressively smart and witty. After a turn of events in the family, they are forced to start living in real civilization and it makes the father really question if he was a good parent all these years.
There are some weird scenes in here, and some WTF scenes especially. But overall, this will give you the warm feel-good vibes and make you consider living in a bus and raising your children to your standards. At least, that’s what it did for me!
4. Life of Pi:
Lastly, but certainly not least: Life of Pi! Packed with adventure and surviving skills learned by a young teenager, this movie really keeps you on your toes from start to finish. In case you’ve been living under a rock, this movie is about a boy who is trapped on a small boat with a tiger for more than 200 days. He starts to feed and water the tiger, knowing that his only other option is to be eaten. Throughout the voyage, he is learning to build character and his faith is challenged many times.
I won’t spoil the plot and ending for you because I think it’s such a fantastic movie. You’ll need to watch it yourself! 🙂 But overall, this movie was such an empowering one – different than the first three – but I also thought it fit in quite perfectly.
Regardless, all of these movies hold something that I feel like I personally identify with. I’m wanting to expand my knowledge of different cultures, live a life full of adventures and the overall simplicity of everything that anyone can appreciate.
Alas, I hope you enjoyed these recommendations! In turn, I would love for you to comment your own favorite inspiring movies. The ones that have challenged your thoughts, the ones that have inspired you or even made you change the way you are and everything in between.
After all, I am a huge movie/TV show buff and love a new watch whenever I can get it.
Can’t wait to see your comments!
